"JHVH" is His first name. It means: "Was, Is, Shall Be." The best English translation would be: "Eternal." God's first name is simply: "I AM"... He exists... He is... He's "Self-Existing." Try fathoming that one. The human mind balks at that name.

They did this so that this holy name could not be taken in vain, or used to swear, as swearing/cursing needs vowels as does anything in speech. They also took a bath every time they had to write either of these names, or anything similar to these names, which led to very clean, but very pruney skin, and the need to buy more "shower supplies"! Also, the cult the Masonic Lodge has a secret name that is known only to them, until recently, and that name is Yoho (pronounced as a truly common man would call a less than reputable woman, yo ho!). This word, no doubt, comes from the Biblical name Yahweh. Other common names for God, though some refer to a particular member of the Trinity (3 persons of the Godhead, which is the same as the Trinity, or Triunity, as They are 3 person in one God) can be found all over the Bible. Some of the more famous ones are: Wonderful, Counselor, the Prince of Peace, Almighty God (specific name for the 1st person, the Father), Al Shaddai (pronounced Al shad-eye), Elohim (plural form for all Three persons), the Bright and Morning Star, Lamb of God (which is Jesus Christ, the 2nd person, the Son of God) and the Comforter (specific name for the 3rd person, the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost, with spirit and ghost meaning exactly the same thing, regardless of how we Americans or modern people think of when we hear about ghosts, as this has nothing to do with graveyards, hauntings nor the witch's holiday, halloween).

The Answer to this Question requires a Book. Aside from the Bible, which reveals the many names of God, there are books that consolidate these names, with explanations to significance and meaning.

Elohim is the first name mentioned of God, as recorded in the Genesis account of Creation. El is the basic name for God, with Elohim, being the plural form. It is notable that this name, which being in plural form, matches the accounts in the rest of Scripture, regarding Christ, as God, creating all things, i.e., John 1:1-3,14; Colossians 1:13-19; regarding the Holy Spirit, as God, moving in Creation to perform it, i.e., Genesis 1:2; Job 33:4. Therefore, it should not be strange to see this in Genesis 1:26: " And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness..." (emphasis added to show the plural nature of God, one God, three persons).

Elohim, in plural form is sprinkled throughout Scriptures in combination of God's characteristics, such as Elohay Selichot, "God Of Forgiveness," literally: "God, Ready to Pardon," in Nehemiah 9:17.

In all, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, my Spirit are names of God. A:The Israelites were actually polytheistic until later in the first millennium BCE.
