"Non-denominational" is not a type of religion. It describes a local congregation of Protestant Christians who usually are more or less conservative in regard to theological, social, financial and political issues. Most distinctively, they do not choose to be affiliated with, connected with or accountable to any authority or organization beyond their own local church. Sometimes the motivation toward independence focuses on maintaining strictly local control of financial resources and mission giving, while in other cases distrust of government, fear of modernity, or perceived intrusion into local traditions and values may result in separation from wider faith communities. As non-denominational groups and congregations develop through years and decades, loose connections and fellowships tend to develop that function much as traditional denominations have always functioned.
