What is the setting of the 23rd Psalm?

Psalms are songs that were to be used in worship, they are spiritual poetry, so there is usually no one definite setting. Psalm 23 in particular is David's description of his relationship with God, as he looks back on his life and recounts God's guiding hand in providence, deliverance, encouragement and comfort and compares it to a relationship of a good shepherd and his sheep. David, who himself was a shepherd once, and then a shepherd of God's people would have been very familiar with this theme, and this would make this psalm very personal to David, but it is also intended for all of God's people, those who have trusted in God and in the Lord Jesus Christ, the good shepherd.
