A:There are many subtle morals in this highly sophisticated story of Adam and Eve, but the key moral of the story concerns how humans came to know good and evil, and why that knowledge is a burden. Before they ate the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, they were innocent and naive, no doubt living every day for the present. They knew nothing of death or the pain of childbirth, nor did they need to work for the things they needed.

Having eaten the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge, they knew all things. Most importantly, they now knew they were destined to die. The story also has a Tree of Life in the Garden, and by eating its fruit, Adam and Eve would become immortal. In Genesis 3:24, God drove out the man and placed at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, cherubim and a flaming sword to keep [block] the way of the Tree of Life. In the Genesis story, Adam and Eve were sent from the Garden and could not be allowed back for fear they would eat of the second tree.

A hidden moral for the ancient audience of this story is that the human longing for immortality is mistaken, because limitless life is undesirable for man. It is incongruous that the next tradition told in Genesis has Adam living an impressive 950 years, almost to immortality.
