What kind of wood was used to build Noah's Ark?

First mention of Noah is when he was about 500 yrs old. he finished building the ark when he was 600 yrs old. So he worked on the ark for approximately 100 years. The ark was made of wood, but this must be a special wood that does not dry up, shrink and do not rot, for 100 years. There are no known tree today that shows this characteristics. It may be extinct now and we may never know what kind of wood Noah used.

Noah's ark was built of cypress wood. Some versions of The Bible refer to the building material as 'gopher wood'. The term comes from the Hebrew, and actually refers to what we know as wood from the cypress tree. According to the Bible, he used a wood called gopher wood.

Gopher wood is also translated cypress wood(NIV)which is a resinous wood especially resistant to decay and water. Pitch is also translated Tar. It was applied to help with waterproofing.

According to the Bible, God told Noah to make an ark out of 'gopher' wood. All kinds of speculation has surrounded just what gopher wood is supposed to be, including suggestions such as cypress. Based on the etymology of the word and the widespread use of reed boats in very early times, some scholars say that gopher wood meant reeds. Of course, an enormous ship like Noah's Ark could not really built out of reeds, but neither could one of that size be built out of any other timber at the time.
