A:The emergence of Coptic Christianity came about because of disagreement over the nature of Jesus. Two distinct schools of theology had developed in Alexandria and Antioch in centuries before the Council of Chalcedon in 451, the former emphasising the allegorical, or spiritual, meaning of the Scriptures, and the latter their literal meaning. Disagreement broke out concerning the definition of Christ and the relationship between his human and divine natures. Despite attempts at compromise, the Council of Chalcedon insisted on Christ's existence "in two natures", a wording which many Monophysites, based in Egypt and parts of the Near East, found that they could not accept.

Alexandria became the headquarters of a new Church, the Coptic Church, which became a force of its own and over the next few hundred years drew in other Churches that had fallen out with the Western Church - the Church of Ethiopia, the majority of the Syrian Church and the Armenians.
