the medieval baker was a freeman. They were aloud to set up bakeries for serfs and they were aloud to move from house to house working for the lords.
If you think of the system in three levels. The first level is the Church, the second is the nobility, and the final level is the peasant. The Church ruled the society and taught that man was born in sin and the only way to save their souls was to go through the church. They were the middle man between man and God.

In the feudal system during and after the Middle Ages, a "knight" was the level below the nobility, who were the level below the king. A "vassal" was granted the use of land in exchange for fealty to a noble or knight. The noblemen directly under the king were called the "barrens" (from which the title baronderives).
The apothecary would typically fall within the merchant or tradesman class in the feudal hierarchy. They would be considered below the nobility and clergy but above the peasants and serfs in terms of social status and wealth.
