Then in the book Don Quixote (early 1600s) by Miguel de Cervantes a similar quote can be found that goes "Love and War are the same thing, and stratagems and polity are as allowable in the one as in the other." The version of the quote that we say today was found in Francis Edward Smedley's Frank Farleigh (1850).
