Pentecost means fiftieth and it fell on what we would call Sunday, seven weeks after the Saturday Sabbath of Passover. Referring to Exodus 12, on the tenth day of their first month (Abib) the Jewish families were to select the Passover lamb which would be killed and prepared on the 14th day. So, through all the years of its observance, it would fall on different days of the week. In AD-30 when Jesus was crucified, what was called the high Sabbath of Passover(John 19:31) fell on Friday. Jesus and the thieves were crucified on Thursday and that is why it was requested that their legs be broken to hasten death so they could be buried before that high Sabbath (Friday). Jesus arose on the third day. Sunday, the first day of the week. The church was established on the first day of the week too. It wasn't 40 days after the ascension as one commenter put it, here. It was just 10 days.
Pentecost is celebrated as the day the Holy Ghost was sent to the Church.
Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter.
