What type of music do Mormons listen to?

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) listen to all types of music. Because Church members are expected to follow the example of Jesus Christ, they tend to avoid music that is extremely irreverent or that encourages immoral behavior.

The Church's pamphlet of standards for teens, called "For the Strength of Youth" says: "Do not listen to music that encourages immorality or glorifies violence through its lyrics, beat, or intensity. Do not listen to music that uses vulgar or offensive language or promotes evil practices."

It is up to the individual to decide for themselves what music is appropriate and what music is inappropriate. Most Mormons enjoy listening to popular music, and there are practicing Mormons in many popular rock bands such as Neon Trees and The Killers.

At church, Mormons use strictly traditional hymns played by a piano or organ. Contemporary music, even Christian contemporary music, is unacceptable in Mormon worship services. Many Mormon families try to listen to religious music on Sundays, although this may expand into more upbeat music like contemporary Christian rock.
