This is not to suggest that the Roman Adoption is the only reason Christianity spread, but it played a large role in why so many other religions vanished, and it played a large role in the consolidation of Christianity as a major religion. It also played a role in the power struggle between the wildly different early Christian sects, many of which were also eventually outlawed and horribly persecuted.

The below response is rather presumptuous and Christocentric, assuming that Jesus is more important than the figures of other religions such as Krishna. Despite all of the Christian apologetics, the Historicity of Jesus is a hotly debated issue and Christian sects often differ in points of doctrine regarding just who or what Jesus was. For instance some believe that Jesus is Yahweh, some believe he sits at the Right Hand of God, some believe he was a prophet, the only thing they all agree on is that Jesus existed in the flesh and that he was extremely important. It is a common error and naive in the extreme to suggest that the Christian Church 'only' spread because of the adoption by the Roman Empire, and shows a total lack of even basic historical knowledge. Whilst this adoption inevitably did help, it is also important to realise that the Church had, by the fourth Century when Constantine adopted Christianity, already spread right across the Empire, against all odds and under severe persecution. It had already spread to India, possibly by the missionary work of Thomas the Apostle, and to Africa, under the guidance of Philip the Apostle and others. It had already spread across the mediterranean area by the First Century AD. There were already thriving churches, many of whom were founded by Paul, long before Paul's death around 60-68AD.

The reason for this spread? Quite simply, unlike the pagan religions of the Greeks and Romans, or the prescriptive and vindictive form of Judaism that had developed, the message of Jesus Christ was one of love. People heard the story of this God-man from Israel, who had been prophesised about hundreds of years before. They heard of his message of love for all. They heard of his miracles; they heard of his authoritative teaching; they heard of his compassion for the poor and oppressed; they heard of his astonishing claims to be God in human form. But most of all they heard of the nature of his death, but were astonished by the victory of his resurrection. By accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and following his way, their lives became changed for ever. They were so utterly convinced by the mission of this one man that many were willing to go to their own deaths in the Roman arenas rather than deny him. Such was the influence of this one man who was described as 'not particularly spectacular' above.

Moreover, the three year mission of this God/man and the Holy Spirit of this resurrected Christ continues to draw people to him today. Whilst the church is in decline in some pockets of the world where some arrogant types think they know better, throughout the world the church continues to grow astronomically. In South Korea, as an example, one church (the Yoido Full Gospel Church) has grown from 6 members in the 1960s to a congregation of nearly 900,000 today who meet in a vast hall in several sittings. In China, an estimated 5000 Christians in the 1960s has grown to an estimated 100 million today, and the church is still growing, despite much persecution. You simply cannot thank the Roman Empire for growth like that!

As stated in the first sentence, this one man, Jesus Christ has influenced more people than any other in history. More people throughout history have given their lives to following this humble carpenter from Nazareth than any other.
