What was Jesus' crucifixion?

Jesus allowed Himself to be crucified on a cross as a substitutionary payment for the sins we have all committed. Jesus was Holy and without sin, so He was the only One who could pay for others' sin. Jesus' crucifixion allowed a Holy God to permit otherwise sinful people to stand forgiven before Him without God comprimising His perfect justice. The gift of eternal life is "offered" through Jesus, but each person must individually "receive" Him for themselves.

A:The original New Testament gospel, on which the others are directly or indirectly based, was Mark's Gospel, so there is general agreement in what Mark's Gospel reports, although to a lesser extent in John's Gospel. Mark breaks down the last twenty four hours into eight segments of just three hours each. The crucifixion begins at the third hour, nine o'clock. At twelve o'clock, the sixth hour, a great darkness covers the earth, mirroring the infamy that took place at twelve midnight when Judas betrayed Jesus. At three o'clock, Jesus cried out and gave up the ghost, with his last words, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" At this very moment, however the author knew this, the curtain in the Temple was torn from top to bottom. When Jesus was crucified, the crowd reviled him. There were two others crucified with Jesus. Women, including Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and of Joses, and Salome, stood afar off, but there was no one of Jesus' acquaintance at the cross.

Matthew's Gospel reports additional happenings. The two thieves crucified with Jesus both reviled him. At the moment Jesus died, an earthquake opened the graves of the saints, who rose up and walked into Jerusalem where they were seen by many.

Luke's Gospel reports differently on one of the two thers crucified, saying that he repented and asked Jesus to remember him in heaven. Jesus replied that he would see him in heaven. It is in this gospel that Jesus said of those crucifying him, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. " His last words were now a more dignified "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit."

John changes quite a lot of the story and has the priests argue with Pilate about the wording placed on the cross, but he prevailed. In this account, Jesus is not sent for crucifixion until the sixth hour, twelve o'clock, but dies very quickly and his last words reflect his divinity and foreknowledge of everything that happened: "It is finished." Because this gospel commences the crucifixion so improbably late if the bodies had to be taken down before sunset, the soldiers broke the legs of the two thieves to hasten their deaths, but only speared Jesus because he was already dead. The paschal lamb must have no bone broken. In this gospel, Mary and an unknown 'disciple whom Jesus loved' were at the foot of the cross, and Jesus commanded the disciple to look after Mary like his own mother.

If Jesus didn't die on the cross, everyone would go to hell. But now that He died and rose again, the people who believe Jesus is God and believe God raised Him from the dead are going to heaven. You don't need to work to go to heaven, it's a free gift, you just gotta believe. And scince Jesus died on the cross, our sins are covered up so He doesn't see our sin. For God so loved the world that He gave His only son, that who ever believes in Him shall not parish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Yeah that was long but it should give you your answer.

It was Gods way of saving us, He sent His Son Jesus to die on a cross to carry the weight of our sins (sin causes death), to die the death we deeserved so we could have access to Him. Then three days later Jesus rose from the grave giving us eternal life. All we have to do is ask Him to forgive us and accept His gift. pretty cool huh!

Matthew's Gospel and Mark's Gospel are in substantial agreement on the events at the crucifixion, apart from the addition in Matthew of the earthquake at the time of Jesus' death, with the dead rising up out of their graves and walking into Jerusalem, where they were seen by many. In Luke, one of the two thieves repented, and Jesus made a more noble statement at the moment of his death. John's account is the only one in which Mary and a disciple were present - in the others, they watched from afar off. This allows John to add a passage in which Jesus ensures care of his mother. John has Jesus say neither the words of Matthew and Mark, nor those of Luke, but merely "It is finished," more suited to a pre-existent God.

They crucified him and parted his garments, then set up a sign over his head, "This is Jesus the king of the Jews." From the sixth hour to the ninth hour there was darkness over the whole land. On the ninth hour, Jesus called out, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit," and died forthwith.

John's Gospel

When the soldiers came to Golgotha They crucified him and set up a sign over his head, in Greek, Latin and Hebrew: "Jesus of Nazareth the king of the Jews." They then parted his clothes. Pilate must have gone to the place of the crucifixion, because the priests argued with him over the wording of the sign.

When Jesus say his mother, Mary, his mother's sister, Mary, and Mary Magdalene standing nearby with the disciple whom he loved (traditionally thought to be John) he told John to look after his mother as if she were his own. They gave Jesus vinegar to drink, then he said, "It is finished," and died forthwith. Because it was nearly the Sabbath, the soldiers came and broke the legs of the other two, to hasten death, but Jesus was already dead so they speared him in the side.
