Jesus died on the cross for our sins. After He had died because of the Preparation Day all bodies had to be removed from the crosses before sundown. The two thief's who were still alive had their legs broken so that they would die quickly as they could not push their bodies up so they could breathe. But when the Roman soldier came to Jesus, they found He had already died so the soldier stabbed him in the side with a spear. Immediately blood and water gushed out, which proved that Jesus was indeed dead. See John 19: for the crucifixion story.
