What was Jesus tempted by in the dessert?

It was the pivotal point in His Life, our lives, and the future of the world... because that was when Jesus "defeated Satan the Devil" [all of his attempts to deceive the mortal, near-death Christ, who was then at the height of His Spiritual Strength]. The result of the "temptation" deposed Satan as the "ruler of the world."

The sovereignty and rulership over mankind and the world, was given to him in the beginning by Adam, the first man, when he and his wife chose to worship and obey his commands instead of the Commandments of their Creator.

In the beginning, God gave them the earth and everything in it... and they gave their sovereignty over it to "that old Serpent" [see Rev.12:9]. And he became mankind's "master"... and mankind became his "slaves;" subject to the pulls of their sinful flesh and blood nature -- the natural carnal minded tendency toward selfishness -- rebelliousness to law and authority.

Because it wasn't until Jesus successfully defeated Satan and his death-hold on the world that He finally "began His earthly ministry; the preaching of His Good News -- the Good News of the nearness of the Kingdom of God."

Because it wasn't until the successful completion of the "temptation" that Jesus qualified Himself to be the new KING of the coming Kingdom on earth that He and His Father have been preparing from the beginning, to replace that part of God's Government that Satan and his angels destroyed before man was made.

"He was there for forty days, being tempted of Satan... Later on, after John was arrested by Herod Antipas, Jesus went into Galilee to preach God's Good News [gospel]. 'At last the time has come!' He announced. "THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS NEAR! Turn from your sins [repent; stop doing what the Devil commands you to do] and BELIEVE this Good News!'" (Mark 1:13-15 NLT New Living Translation)

What the "temptation of Christ" was, was that Christ defeated the god of this world, then. Where mankind gave in to him from the start... obeying and worshiping him instead of the One who Created man -- Jesus Christ! [see John 1:1-3]

"Thou shalt have no other gods before Me."

So, it was "man's Creator, Jesus Christ," who came in the flesh to save His creation. And that Salvation began to be fulfilled with the defeat of the one who enslaved mankind in the first place: that old Serpent, Satan the Devil. The one who caused man to first disobey the True Creator and LORD God.

It wasn't until the timing was right, and a successor to Satan's rule over the earth qualified Himself as worthy of ruling God's soon-to-be-restored Governmental branch on earth, that God's plan could proceed on schedule.

The successful completion of the "temptation" put Christ on course, then, to take on all of mankind's sins [disobedience to God's Commandments; which is obedience to Satan and the pulls of the flesh - I John 3:4]. His subsequent death and shedding of His Divine blood [phase 1 of God's plan: the Passover] qualifies Him, the now Living Christ, to "redeem" [buy back] His creation, mankind, from their present master... so that man can grow and learn to serve the one True Righteous Master.

Man's present "master's" ways are the ways of selfishness and rebellion. The "Righteous Master's" ways are the ways of Selflessness and Obedience.

Thanks to the Devil and his angels restrained here on earth, pending their coming trial on Judgment Day [see Jude 1:5-6 & II Peter 2:4] this world is "subject to their vile, evil influence"... a spiritual force with which God's creation must be acquainted, so that it might learn to reject it. This world is filled with selfishness, rebelliousness, hatred, retribution, envy, jealousy, lust, greed, misery, suffering and death. The world to come, however, will be filled with the Children of God's Immortal Family; a world filled with Love, Co-operation, Grace, Mercy and Forgiveness.

"For unto the angels He hath NOT put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak." (Heb.2:5 KJV)

Jesus was Obedient to His Father's command to sacrifice Himself for His creation [as was alluded to in the famous sacrificial Abraham and Isaac account] . And Jesus, although terrified of the prospects of the death He was to endure for His creation, Selflessly did His Father's will. And His first step was to starve Himself to near-death... where He found Himself "Spiritually" prepared to successfully take on this world's god in the "temptation."

That is where mankind has always been the weakest: in his "slumbering spirit." And that's where a servant of the True God begins to grow and develop, spiritually in Righteous Character, as God's Child and future member of the Immortal God Family -- fed and nourished, spiritually strong and healthy, with the Bread of God: His Holy Word, The Bible, which are the Holy Spirit-inspired Words of Jesus Christ.

In the King James version, in this story the author refers to "the devil", and "the tempter"....

• Mat 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

• Mat 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

.... but the author 'quotes' Jesus as calling the devil "Satan".

• Mat 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
