Joseph Smith was awaiting trial for ordering the destruction of a printing press as mayor of Nauvoo. The press had been causing an uproar in the community for printing anti-Mormon material, and he ordered that it be destroyed because it was a "public nuisance". The owners of the press regarded this as destruction of personal property and an infringement of free speech, inciting enemies from neighboring towns. To protect the public safety, Joseph declared martial law and called on the Nauvoo Legion to protect the city. This act was viewed as treason against the state of Illinois, and the governor called for Joseph and the Nauvoo city council to appear in county court. Because of the uproar about the event, it was decided that Joseph Smith would be held in the Carthage jail to await his trial. This was meant to protect him from enemies who threatened to kill him rather than allow his case to be heard. Joseph stayed in an upstairs bedroom with friends while the local militia, the Carthage Greys, guarded the jail.

Unfortunately, the Carthage Greys were known to be anti-Mormon. The afternoon of June 27, 1844, an armed mob of about 200 men stormed the jail, joined by some members of the Carthage Greys. With little to defend themselves, a short battle at the door to the room ensued, Willard Richards trying to deflect the guns with his walking stick while Joseph fired three rounds. At this point they were out of ammunition and the mob had fully pushed through the door. The mob shot and killed Joseph and his brother Hyrum, while friends Willard Richards and John Taylor were injured.
