Joseph Smith was awaiting trial for ordering the destruction of a printing press as mayor of Nauvoo. The press had been causing an uproar in the community for printing anti-Mormon material, and he ordered that it be destroyed because it was a "public nuisance". The owners of the press regarded this as destruction of personal property and an infringement of free speech, inciting enemies from neighboring towns. To protect the public safety, Joseph declared martial law and called on the Nauvoo Legion to protect the city. With little to defend themselves, a short battle at the door to the room ensued, Willard Richards trying to deflect the guns with his walking stick while Joseph fired three rounds. At this point they were out of ammunition and the mob had fully pushed through the door. The mob shot and killed Joseph and his brother Hyrum, while friends Willard Richards and John Taylor were injured.
