Peter was a business man. When you look at his decision to follow Jesus, you see that he had more than one boat. He was the equivalent of today's small chain owner. He employed men and oversaw the day to day operations of his business. Fishing was/is an honorable profession.
We also are told that he had a mother-in-law (Jesus heals her and the whole town's sick people in her house), which meant that he had a wife. Although he left her at home when he first followed Jesus, from I Cor. 9:5 it appears that at one point she traveled with Peter in his ministry. Catholic tradition says she also was martyred for her faith.

Jesus' disciples
Before his baptism, Jesus did not have formally identified disciples. The Gospels suggest that he began to gather followers after his baptism by John the Baptist, when he started his public ministry. However, there were individuals, such as John the Baptist's own disciples, who recognized Jesus' significance before his baptism. The formal calling of his disciples, as recorded in the Gospels, occurs after this event.
