What was religion like during the 1850s?

In the 1850s liberalists ideas caused great change in religious believes and the churches. Deist believed that a supreme being created the world and that it can be proved through science. The church lost a lot of power due to liberalism spreading and went through reform.

Most people were Christians or Catholics and their beliefs came from what The Bible told them. However when Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution, everything the Bible had told them about how God created the Earth in 7 days was challenged. Although people were not completely open to the idea at Fiat they did begin to question whether the teachings of Christainity were the only possibilities. They began to question the beliefs of the Church and became obsessed with science and proving things as this point in time saw a real turning point in science, perticularl in CSI and fingerprinting.

Many people also became spiritualist, Spiritualism was a religious movement where people believed that human spirits can survive physival death.

The North declared that slavery was an abomination and an abuse of human beings that were created in the image of Our Lord.

The South declared that slavery was a perfect God-given arrangement of master and man.
