The first thing that we notice is that, just as God did not make Adam out of nothing, he also could not make Eve out of nothing. Thus, we can see that the author of this passage, the Yahwist, saw real limits to God's power. Scholars of the Hebrew language, studying exactly what was written in Genesis, say that even the earth was actually pre-existing.

Making Eve out of Adam's rib was more romantic than making her out of dust, as he made Adam. She would be a part of Adam and owed her existence to him.
