Aside from the battles with the Philistines, his only challenge was that he had to follow his own guidance in certain things; and he did not always choose correctly. The chief example of this is when he considered David an enemy. Some of his (Saul's) advisors pressed him in the wrong direction on this martter, but ultimately Saul had to reach his own decision; and it turned out to be a mistaken one.
