There were/are many different religions among the indigenous peoples of the Great Plains. Possibly the best known to the world is that of the Lakota, who worshipped a pantheon of 16 gods, divided into four groups of greater, lesser, associate and companion deities.
The dominate concept of Lakota religion was that of Wakan, which can mean "holiness" or "mystery." Many things possessed some degree of wakan, and the Wakan Tanka, usually translated as "Great Spirit," could also be "Great Mystery."
A meaningful Lakota phrase is "hau" (hah-OO), which means "I am paying attention."
