Several signs that you will see on statues of The Buddha marking him as special:
The knot at the top of his head- a sign of enlightenment.
The curls of hair (They will often look like dots or spikes of hair on his head) This is each hair curling into a perfect spiral because of his peace with the universe.
The long ears are signs of giving up his wealth; as a prince, he wore golden earrings that stretched his ears. They remained stretched for the rest of his life.
A smile, signifying his enlightenment.
Possibly touching the earth, as a sign of his connection to the rest of the world.
Historical signs: He was a prince with revolutionary ideas that led him to live both lifestyles to the extreme; as a prince, and extravagant lifestyle, and as an aesthetic (sp?) an extremely scarce lifestyle. Supposedly, when he first became an aesthetic, he was meditating and a huge cobra came up and shielded him from the rain that fell. The other aesthetics saw this and knew he was special.
Also, there're two stories about his birth. One was he was prophecied to be either a great king or an even greater spiritual leader. His father wanted him to be a king, and tried to hide the suffering of the world from him to keep him from becoming a spiritual leader.
The second is that when he was first born, he stood and spoke to his mother, telling her that he would bring an end to suffering. (<--this last statement might be incorrect)
