In his epistles, Paul seems to have believed that the appearances of the risen Jesus were purely spiritual. On the other hand, the gospels go to some lengths to assure the reader that Jesus appeared to the disciples as a man in the flesh. He ate a piece of fish and showed his wounds, offering to allow the disciples to touch him.

A historical perspective allows a somewhat different answer. We now know that Mark's Gospel was the first New Testament gospel to be written and that the other gospels were based directly (Matthew and Luke) or indirectly (John) on Mark. This is relevant here, because Markoriginally ended at verse 16:8, with the young man telling the women that Jesus was risen and they fled in terror, telling no one. In this original account, Jesus did not appear after he rose from the dead. The 'Long Ending' (verses 16:9-20) was added long afterwards.

Since the authors of the other gospels knew nothing about the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus other than what they learnt from Mark, it is now understandable why each account of the risen Jesus is so different from the others. It s also clear that these portrayals of Jesus appearing in the flesh were not historical records. Some of the gnostic gospels took a different approach and explained that Jesus only appeared as a spirit.

Whether Jesus appeared as a spirit or in the flesh is a matter of portrayal by the various authors, and a matter of faith.

What did the use to beat Jesus with?

The answer to this question is rather from the divine prospective. Because the spirit war against the flesh.(Galatians5v17) For the flesh lusteth against the spirit and spirit against the flesh, and these are contrary one to the other. So what the Bible depict as a beating in parables it is really a situation between the spirit and the flesh.

What does the Night Vigil symbolize at Maundy Thursday?

The night vigil on Maundy Thursday was the beginning of Jesus' passion. Jesus and the Diciples has already had the Last Supper, and frankly the Disciples were full and content. Jesus asked the Disciples to stay up and watch while he went into the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Jesus was very distressed because he knew he was going to be crucified, and he knew what a painful death that was going to be. He asked only that the Disciples stay up and "watch" with him. He needed support, friendship, love. And he got none of those. Their failure is ours -- they fell asleep. Hence Jesus' famous saying: "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." You can't really blame the Disciples, they just wanted a warm bed and some sleep. Jesus knew otherwise, and that is the symbolic act. At Jesus' most dire hour -- when he could have said no to crucifixion, but chose to say yes, where were the Disciples? Asleep. Just like us.

Did Paul write about any of Jesus' miracles?

Paul never wrote of the life and mission of Jesus. He mentioned that Jesus was crucified, but some scholars question whether he saw that as a spiritual crucifixion or a physical crucifixion on earth. Raymond E Brown and many other scholars note that Paul, in his references to a risen body, spoke of one that was spiritual and not flesh and blood.

The body and blood of Jesus when it is displayed?

It is displayed many times in the Scriptures. Here is one:Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. (John 6.53)But these words are spiritual as Jesus said:It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. (John 6.63)
