Dear friend
I do not think that there is any one answer to your question as to when it originated or even when. I would sugest if I may; it is possible that the position of the fingers do point towards heaven. Interlocking the fingers is a form of suplication, or imploring the Lord. I do hope that this may help in some way in answering your question. As a guess I would say that interlocking the fingers may have come first, but because of the difficulty some found in doing this, it was far easier to place the hands together.
With respect.
