When did Jesus come back from the dead?

The Passover that week in "31ad" was on "our "Wednesday." The following day was the first day of "Unleavened Bread"... a "feast" day:

"...In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the Lord's Passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of Unleavened Bread unto the Lord..." (Lev.23:5-6).

The Passover is not a "feast" day... it's a "memorial" day. The day after is the "feast."

Jesus was buried before sundown [according to the law - see Deut.21:22-23].

Therefore, according to "the only sign" Jesus gave to prove His Messiahship [the sign of Johah - Matt.12:39-40]... three days and three nights from the time of His burial on that "Wednesday" evening -- Jesus rose from the dead three days and three nights later... on our "Saturday," or on the Sabbath day that week "just before sundown," the same time of day He was placed in the tomb.

Jesus rose on the third day after being dead. Although people say that it's just the third day, with some religions it is said that he rose on Easter Sunday. Hence the importance of the holiday.

A common misconception is that he died on Friday. Unfortunately, if indeed he resurrected on Sunday morning (as scripture says) then Jesus was only dead for 2 days (do the math). That doesn't fit. So if you want the quick and easy answer, skip down to the row of equals signs.

It is significant that Jesus died on the Jewish festival of Passover, was buried right at the Festival of Unleavened Bread and resurrected three days later on the morrow after the sabbath, which was the feast of First-Fruits.

John 19:13-16; 31-33 - When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon.

"Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews.

But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!"

"Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked.

"We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered.

Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. -- Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead...

Luke 24:1-23 - but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.

As you can see, the first portion of answer is totally untrue if your source is to be the disciples' accounts in The Bible. Died Friday - the day before the Sabaath (saturday) and passover (also saturday), or the day of the preparation. They found his absence Sunday morning, being three days, as long prophecied

Here are the four accounts:

When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave.

Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, and said, "Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I am to rise again.'

"Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, 'He has risen from the dead,' and the last deception will be worse than the first."

Pilate said to them, "You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how." And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.

Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, " Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying."

When evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.

They were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?"

Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large. Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed.

And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.

After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. So the disciples went away again to their own homes.

But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?"

She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him."

When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.

Now what we see from these four accounts was that Jesus died on Preparation day (the day before the sabbath). And then he resurrected early Sunday morning.

Furthermore, As Jesus states in Matthew 12:40 "for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." From this we can surmise that Jesus (who doesn't lie) HAS to be in the grave for a complete three days and three nights.

For those who do not know, a regular sabbath starts sun down on Saturday. Therefore, reading these verses one could come to understand that Jesus died Friday morning and then resurrected on Sunday morning.

Simple math tells us that if such were the case, Jesus would have only been buried 2 days and 2 nights. So did he lie? Obviously not.

You see, Johns account gives us a little insight. John states that the Sabbath after the Preparation Day was a high sabbath. What's a high Sabbath? A High Sabbath refers to the 7 Leviticus Feasts. These feasts were also days of rest, and thus became known as High Sabbaths. Although in the Old Testament they are simply called Sabbaths.

So what does it mean? In order to account for the third day in which Jesus MUST have been buried for, Jesus must have died on Thursday morning on Nisan 14th. Which means that Friday Nisan 15th was the Feast of Unleavened Bread and therefore a High Sabbath (Passover was the night before) (Leviticus 23:4-8 Numbers 28:16-25). The next day was Saturday and thus was another Sabbath. Two Sabbaths in a row.

According to Numbers 23:11 The Feast of Firstfruits was to be celebrated the day after the Sabbath (Saturday). The feast of Firstfruits therefore is always on a Sunday.

Which means That Jesus died on Passover morning (Preparation Day) on Thursday. Friday was the first day of Unleavened bread. Saturday was weekly Sabbath. And Sunday Jesus resurrected on the feast of First-fruits.

FYI, Jewish Days start at Sun down and end the next day at sun down. This is because Genesis says that evening and morning were the first day.

It's believed in today's traditions that He was crucified on Friday and raised on Sunday morning, but, in truth this is inaccurate. If He was crucified Friday near noon and He rose early on the third morning, this would mean that from Friday noon to Saturday noon is one day. Saturday noon to Sunday noon would be two days. The third morning would be before the sun came up on Monday morning. But the Bible says He was raised on the FIRST day of the week. The first day of the Gregorian week is Sunday, not Monday. Monday is the second day of the week.

The only way that Christ could have rose on Sunday morning, is if He was put to death on Thursday. If He was put to death on Friday, He rose on Monday. But the scripture is clear that He rose on the FIRST day of the week, which is Sunday. So, the day of His crucifixion in our modern theological age is inaccurate, rather than the day of His resurrection.

Another Answer:

In the Scripture, a day begins and ends at sunset. Jesus arose on Saturday just before the sunset which would begin Sunday when He was seen in the dark, morning hours. Shortly after that He ascended to His Father representing the 'Wave Sheaf' offering for all mankind. He was accepted by the Father.

Afterwards, for the next 40 days, Jesus would come and go and was seen by many. At the end of the 40 days, He ascended back to His Father in Heaven, not to return to Earth again until the time of His 2nd Coming. Ten days after this event, the 1st Pentecost happened on Sunday - 50 days after His resurrection (7 weeks from Saturday plus 1 day).

A Chronology by some biblical scholars reflects the following dates:

Crucifixion: Wednesday, 25 April 31 AD, dies at the 9th hour or 3:00 PM.

Resurrection: Saturday, 28 April 31 AD, just before sunrise and the new day.

Wave Sheaf Offering: sometime on Sunday, 29 April 31 AD.

Ascension: 07 June 31 AD, daylight portion of our modern Thursday (40 days).

1st Pentecost: Sunday, 17 Jun 31 AD (50 days from Saturday Resurrection).
