In the time of Abraham (around 1943 BCE), the area was known as 'Salem' (meaning "Peace" or 'Twofold Peace") and was ruled over by King/Priest Melchizedek (Genesis 14:17-20) (Hebrews 7:2). It was the same area where Abraham had earlier offered up his son, Isaac 'in the mountains of Moriah'(Genesis 22:2; 2, Chronicles 3:1)

After Abraham met Melchizedek, there was a 465 year period before the Israelites conquored Canaan, when this area was inhabited by pagan Hamitic Canaanites, and by then, it was referred to as "Urusalim" by the Caananite rulers according to 'The Amarna Tablets' (Canaanite historical records). (Joshua 15:63)

Then, of course, by 1070 BCE, when David took it over from the Jebusites, it was the capital city of the ancient nation of Israel, and known as Jerusalem (which incorporated the original name 'Salem') and meant "Possession of Twofold Peace."
