Self-help is useful should you realize that you have a serious problem and in turn conclude that if you do not help yourself, no one else will. That even if they do; it will not be adequate.
Self-help most often takes the form of self-help groups, 12-Step recovery programs, Voluntary committing yourself to a hospital or institution, seeking help from doctors and social workers of your own volition, trying out a new form of spirituality or religion, diet, exercise or may just be a book that you read and take it's ideas and instructions to heart. Mainly it is that YOU decide to do these things FOR YOU, not for anyone else or because you feel obligated (or get forced) to.
It is at it's most useful when you feel the most helpless. If you can start by admitting you have a problem and take steps to fix it...legitimate "help" is in fact possible. When you find yourself in a REALLY BAD spot, be it physically, mentally, emotionally, whatever. Telling yourself "I'm in trouble I need help," is normally more useful in the long run than waiting for (or hoping that) some external force will solve your problem FOR YOU-This is rare.
Therefore I'll equally state that self-help is ALWAYS USEFUL.
