Catholic Answer St. David, a bishop and confessor, patron of Wales, was acclaimed a saint before the canonization process came into being.
Saint David became a saint because he helped the Welsh defeat the Saxon, by telling them that they should put something on them so that they know that they aren't killing the wrong soldiers. So he picked up a "leek" a type of flower, and said to put it on there helmet's and before you know, Welsh defeated the Saxon. Then they decided to make that monk, named David a Saint.
