The Roman Agrippina the Elder (14 BC - 33AD) began the construction of a garden across the Tiber from Rome around the time of the death of Jesus. The area was expanded and became the Circus of Nero. It became the site of mass martyrdoms following the fire of 64 AD, and various catacombs (the necropolis) were extended beneath the area. It was later thought to be the site of the tomb of St. Peter. A church was constructed on the site around 326 AD by Constantine after the establishment of Christianity as the official religion of Rome.
