It was Solomon's father, David, who was first commanded to build the temple so that the Ark of the Covenant could be housed (and be a place for the Lord to rest). But David was not worthy, and so his son Solomon was given the responsibility. Jerusalem (Formally Salem) was captured by David and he chose it to be his capital. The temple was destroyed a number of times and rebuilt, only to be destroyed by the Romans, but actually it was destroyed by the babylonians in 586B.C.E when they sacked the city.
