Yes a flood did occur. In chapters 6-9 of Genesis. Displeased with the Earth and the wickedness of man, God was said to want to start anew, and warned the only righteous man of his generation: Noah. He commissioned him to build a great ark and to gather the beasts of the world in pairs upon it. Interestingly enough, a great flood occurs in several religions, including Muslim and Greek Mythology. Many out comes were different as well as the causes, but it can be speculated that long ago there was a flood big enough to appear in several different cultures.
