There are potentially two sources of information on the date of the parting of the Red Sea - the biblical account and the extensive records of the Egyptians. According to the Biblical record, this event seems to have taken place around 1440 BCE.

As for Egyptian records, we have relatively extensive documentary evidence of life in ancient Egypt during the time the Israelites supposedly lived there. However, the Israelites were never mentioned or referred to. In all the royal records and documents, letters, business contracts and the like, no Egyptian ever mentioned a race of slaves among them, nor were Joseph or Moses ever mentioned, in spite of their supposedly quite significant impact on Egyptian rule. If the Israelites were ever in Egypt, the Egyptians give us no hint as to when they fled or when the Red Sea was parted. If the event occurred around 1440 BCE, this would be at a time when the Egyptians were the complete masters of the Canaanites. The Israelites would have been fleeing from Egypt to a region under close Egyptian military control, yet their arrival in Canaan was never alluded to, even in the Amarna letters. The Egyptian records militate against these events occurring at any time during the late Bronze Age.
