"Pentecostal", which derives from "Pentecost", was historically celebrated 7 weeks (49 day) after Easter Sunday, on the 50th day. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers in Acts 2:1-4. The Pentecostal Group believes this marked the initial evidence of the "promise" given by Jesus himself after His Resurrection. In Luke 24, He [Jesus] commanded the disciples to go to Jerusalem and "tarry" or wait for the POWER from on high (v. 49) to come. The disciple and other followers obeyed Jesus and did just that! The book of Acts confirms their obedience and confirms the promise. Acts 2:1-4 reads1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. ....6Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? As the people were amazed and marvelled of of hearing their different languages being spoken, 38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call. Thank God For the Power!
