The Gloria originated in a field at night on Christmas, as recorded in the Gospel of St. Luke 2:14. It begins with the angels' canticle when announcing the birth of Jesus to the shepherds.

From there the Gloria developed as more verses were added until the 4th century AD. In the 4th century AD, it became part of Morning prayer.

According to tradition, the Latin translation of the Gloria that we have now was done by St. Hilary of Poitiers, who lived from c. 300 t 368.
