Most influences come from being brought up to believe in it. For example, if a baby is born from Muslim parents, then the parents might try and raise the baby as a Muslim. Or if someone has experienced something that they thought was extraordinary or something along the lines of that, they might think they want to be a part of it.

Sometimes, if a person sees that a religion follows certain rules, and one agrees with these rules as well, they might join the religion and be able to confer with other people about things that they can all agree on
