I think you are asking about The Tower of Babel in Genesis 11. The people were not making an idol, but rather had set out to build a tower to heaven. They had effectively made themselves and their own strengths into an idol. God confused their communication and man no longer spoke a single language after this event, but rather they had many different languages.
