Where was the home of Joseph who buried Jesus?

To this day, no one knows where Joseph the foster father of Jesus is buried. His tomb's location is a mystery. There is no historical record, no conclusive archaeological find, no pious traditions. It is speculated that St. Joseph died in Nazareth and may be buried somewhere in the area. There are pious assertions that St. Joseph may have, like the Blessed Virgin Mary, been assumed body and soul into heaven, however, the more common belief is that his tomb will be discovered in the end times and powerful graces will come from devotion to his patronage.

The Joseph who buried Jesus in his own tomb was said to be from Arimathea. Scholars have long pondered just where Arimathea was. It had to be close enough that he could expect his own body to be taken there after his death, so would have to have been in the vicinity of Jerusalem. Centuries of search have so far uncovered no archaeological evidence of such a location, and no Jewish reference that would help locate it has ever been found. Some say that Arimathea never really existed, while others claim to pinpoint it just to the north-west of Jerusalem.

Another, scholarly view is that Arimathea was an idea, not a place. The disciples had all abandoned Jesus after his arrest, with Peter even denying Jesus three times. In Greek, the language of the gospels, Arimathea resembles "best disciple town". So, the author of Mark may have created Joseph and identified him as the "best disciple" because he did not abandon Jesus, but placed himself at risk by asking to bury Jesus.

Petrus Comestor (ca. 1100-1179) claimed that Arimathea was another name for Ramathaim-Zophim in Ephraim, the birth-place of Samuel, where David came to Samuel. (1 Samuel 1:1, 19), a view still accepted by some. Others believe it was Ramlah in Dan, or Ramah in Benjamin. (Matt. 2:18)
