Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) believe that an angel named Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith, Jr when he was in his late teens and showed him in vision the place where the plates were buried. He went to this place for several years on the same day to receive direction from the angel before he was allowed to take them home to begin translation. In all, four men, including Joseph, touched and handled the plates, with an additional eight seeing them but not holding them. Others saw or carried the plates while they were covered with a cloth, as they were not to be exposed to anyone's veiw without express permission from God.
The plates are described by those who saw or held them as being gold in color, held together by three D-shaped rings, weighing about 40 to 60 pounds, six to seven inches wide by about eight inches long and four to six inches thick, with each piece being about as thick as parchment or thick paper (like cardstock). About 2/3 of the pages were sealed up so that they could not be opened. There were very small engravings covering both sides of each page that were meant to be read from right to left.
These plates were translated by the power of God into the Book of Mormon, which is considered by members of the Church as being equally as sacred as The Bible.
The duration of American Mormon is 2100.0 seconds.
American Mormon was created on 2005-09-06.
Joseph Smith claimed to have found such plates, which unfortunately are no longer available for viewing, having been taken back up to heaven after being translated. The plates were translated into The Book of Mormon, which can be read at the "Related Link" below.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) believe that an ancient American prophet named Moroni buried the scriptural and historic record of his people, written on metal tablets, in about the year 300 AD. In the 1820's, Moroni (as an angel) lead the young Joseph Smith to the place where these tablets were buried and instructed him on how to translate and publish them. The translation was published in 1830 as "The Book of Mormon". The Book of Mormon is one of the central focal points of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has been described as the "Keystone" of Mormonism. If the Book of Mormon is not true, every claim of Mormonism would be false. If the Book of Mormon is true, than every claim of Mormonism is true. This is because the Book of Mormon proves the prophetic calling of Joseph Smith and thus substantiates every single thing he did and taught as he founded the Church. Without the Book of Mormon, there would be no Mormonism; and without Mormonism, there would be no Book of Mormon.
No, the Book of Mormon is not mentioned in the Bible. The Book of Mormon is a separate religious text used by the Latter-day Saint movement.
Joseph Smith, Jr. claimed to have been lead to buried ancient metal tablets by an angel. Joseph then translated these tablets and returned them to the angel. The translation of the tablets was published as The Book of Mormon. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) use the Book of Mormon as scripture along with the Bible. The Book of Mormon tells the story of a group of people who left Jerusalem around the time of Jeremiah, having been warned of God of the coming Babylonian Captivity. God lead the group through the wilderness and across the ocean to the Americas. The Book of Mormon tells of their history, prophets, and religion between 600 BC and 400 AD, including a visit of Jesus Christ following His Ascension. The Mormon Trail got it's name because it was used by tens of thousands of Mormon pioneers travelling west to find religious freedom.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believes that the Book of Mormon was written on golden colored (although not necessarily the metal gold) plates, delivered to the prophet Joseph Smith by the Angel Moroni. Joseph Smith then translated the plates by the power of God and published the writings as The Book of Mormon. Mormons use the Book of Mormon side-by-side with the Bible. Other religious groups which have broken off from the Mormon Church, such as the Community of Christ and the Apostolic United Brethren also use the Book of Mormon as scripture.
