In some scriptures Buddha died peacefully in the forest while laying down. He was tired, so he layed down on a tree stump and rest in peace. In some scriptures it is said that The Buddha died from eating "bad pork" ["pork" is roughly translated as mushroom. :-)]

The Buddha became ill one retreat season many years after he became Enlightened. His followers thougbh he would die, but gained some strength. But then they had to travel... He knew he would die within 3 months. And so eventually he ate a meal comprised of some mushrooms picked from beneth a sandalwood tree. He became violently ill and died a few days afterwards after uttering his last testament.

How did the buddha's teachings impact others in his lifetime?

In many different ways. Thousands of monks and nuns are said to have attained enlightenment. Perhaps the most radical impact was found in the person of Angulimala. Angulimala was a mass-murderer who wore a necklace with one tooth from each of his victims. He met the Buddha, and attempted to kill him. Instead, the Buddha persuaded him to give up violence. Angulimala became a Buddhist monk and eventually attained enlightenment.
