Elijah did not literally go to heaven carried by a chariot of fire. This is symbolic of his going to heaven in glory.

Most unlikely. If you are looking for a non-biblical explanation for the fiery chariot, consider that it was commonly understood throughout the ancient Near East that the sun god was taken up into heaven in a fiery chariot. Then look for passages in the story of Elijah that could predate the overall story, and have been references to the sun god.
Apollo was the sun god. He drove around in a flying chariot called the sun chariot. The sun chariot was a form of transportation able to transform into anything he desired.
Elijah was not condemned. He was taken to heaven in a chariot.
