A brAhmaNaH is so called because brahma also means the mantra. Since as a member of the priestly class he is expected to keep the mantra in his mouth i.e. keep repeating it to keep it live he is called a brAhmaNaH

How does one become a brAhamaNa? The smR^iti says brahma j~nAnenaiva brAhmaNaH = by attaining the knowledge of brahman only one becomes a true brAhmaNa otherwise he is only one by birth, or one in the making.
