The answer is found in the chronology of the scriptures. Matthias is first mentioned in Acts 1:23 and then later in Acts 1:26. Barnabas is not mentioned until 4:36 and then later in chapter 9. Acts 1 describes how the disciples choose lots to find a replacement for Judas. Matthias was selected but we know nothing about him before this time or afterwards. He must have been a faithful servant, someone like Stephen. The first mention of Barnabas is when he gave all his possessions to the church in Chapter 4. It wasn't until Chapter 9, many years later, that he goes on a mission with Paul. I find it interesting that the apostles felt the need to replace Judas. Why? Most people interpret the events to mean that this decision was wrong to make and God had plans to raise up a 12th apostle through Paul. However, drawing of lots was quite common method to make decisions at that time and even centuries later(however, not normal for the Church).
