Miriam was the sister of Moses and Aaron, and the daughter of Amram and his wife Jochebed, both of the tribe of Levi. (Numbers 26:59; 1Chronicles 6:1-3) When Pharoah's daughter took Moses out of the Nile, and adopted him, Miriam was the one who suggested 'finding' a Hebrew woman to nurse the child for her. Pharoah's daughter agreed and '"the maiden went and called the child's mother" (Jochebed), who then cared for Moses until he grew up.-Exodus 2:5-10.

Later, after the exodus from Egypt, in the wilderness, Miriam was considered a prophetess(Exodus 15:20&21), and so a woman of prominence, who set an example for God's people. Because of this, she was severely disciplined when she jealously spoke out against Moses, God's hand-picked servant, and was stricken with leprosy for her disloyalty and rebellion. (Numbers 12:1-15)(Deuteronomy 24:8, 9).
