The Buddha- Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini (in present day Nepal), somewhere around 580 BCE; to a royal family of Sakya clan. His father was king Suddodhana and his mother was queen Maya. Siddhartha means "one who has achieved his aim." Gautama is family or clan name. He was sometimes referred to as Śãkyamuni which means "the sage of the Śãkyas."
