Mary and Joseph were obliged to go to Bethlehem for the census by the Roman authorities. In a sense you could also say God led them, since it was ordained that Christ would be born in Bethlehem.
It's a pretty fable. The Christmas star is so significant because it represents the Star of Bethlehem, which in the Nativity Story led shepherds and the Three Kings to locate the baby Jesus from afar. They eventually found Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in a small stable in Bethlehem and worshipped him.
There is no better answer to this question than by quoting from the actual scripture taken from Luke Ch. 1 v 1-5. 1 AND it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. it led the three kings to the jesus baby
The people of Nazareth questioned Jesus' ability to teach in the synagogue because they were familiar with him as the son of Joseph, a carpenter, and perceived him as an ordinary local figure rather than a learned teacher. Their skepticism stemmed from their disbelief that someone with his humble background could possess such wisdom and perform miracles. This lack of faith and recognition of his authority ultimately led to their rejection of him.

-----------------------The Bible does not say it took the wise men two years to find Jesus. In fact, Matthew 2:1 says (KJV): "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem." There is no historical reference to the wise men, but if they did come to visit Jesus it would seem to have been shortly after his birth.
The sign in the sky was a star. It was a bright star in the East that led the Wise Men to where Jesus was born.
