By definition, a God or gods, or nature spirits should be at the centre of religion. It is the worship or belief in these beings that makes religion what it is. Many religions also teach high moral values and include Codes of Conduct, but these are not essential to religion - in fact such codes of conduct have at times been more honoured in the breach.
