King Herod had been alerted to the birth of Jesus by the wise men who visited the child when he was already about 2 years of age. This is why Herod had ordered the extermination of all male children of about that age (Matthew 2:16). In fact, that extermination order may well have included the young John the Baptist, who was approximately six months older than the Savior. This could be why John is later found living in the wilderness surrounding Jordan. His parents may have taken him there to escape Herod's decree. Scripture tells us that Jesus was spared because Joseph was warned in a dream to take the child and flee to Egypt (Matthew 2:13) where they remained until Herod's death some time later. Upon returning, however, the family chose to relocate to Nazareth because they still didn't trust the political atmosphere in Judea (Matthew 2:22-23).
