That's probably just a myth that people made up in order to lionize Jesus. It is unlikely that that actually happened. It was probably made up to show the importance of Jesus, as it implies that even nature is paying respects to him or maybe that nature is trying to scare or punish those that crucified such a man.

Contrary to the above answer, the earthquake was mentioned by the comtemporary historian Thallus as was the sky darkening, possibly due to an eclipse. Thallus wrote a history of the Trojan War although no works by Thallus now survive. However, his writings are mentioned by Eusebius and also Julius Africanus who quoted his works in 221AD. In his account of the crucifixion of Jesus he writes:

"On the whole world there pressed a most fearful darkness; and the rocks were rent by an earthquake, and many places in Judea and other districts were thrown down. This darkness Thallus, in his third book of History, calls (as appears to me without reason) an eclipse of the sun."

Just because an event is not mentioned in 'the press' it does not make it a myth. While the gospels themselves record the earthquake, sceptics who are ignorant of Biblical historicity may take their scepticism too far and dismiss the gospels for being biassed. However, independent secular historical evidence and known geological tendencies for earthquakes in those parts is another matter and must be taken very seriously as corroborating evidence that the earthquake did take place just as the Biblical account say.

It is unlikely that the fact that the earthquake occurredwas miraculous, but the fact that it occurred at that time and at that place was highly significant showing those around that Jesus' death was not simply the execution of a common criminal but that his death was a unique event in history - recognised as such by all around, including the priests who asked Pilate to place a guard in the tomb, and even the roman Centurion who recognised, at that moment, that Jesus was divine.
