This was Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus). Both Justus and Matthias were chosen from the followers of Christ, and , after a great deal of prayer for God's guidance, lots were drawn to see who would be the new disciple. Matthias won and Justus was left. [Acts 1: 23-24]

This story also represents the last time that lots were used by the disciles in making decisions. After the coming of the Holy Spirit a little later, decisions were then made by prayer alone after the Holy Spirit's guidance.
