Jesus was killed by the commonly accepted method of capital punishment under the Roman system, crucifixion. The cause of death in this case was often asphyxiation and/or heart failure as the lungs would tend to fill with fluid. Loss of blood and dehydration, together with the excruciating pain and mental torture were also factors.

In other words, it was a terrible death and one which He endured for everyone on thie planet, even those who hated Him and hate Him still.
