Under the Mosaic Law, adultry was punishable by death (Leviticus 20:10/Exodus 20:10). That principle still shows how God feels about disloyalty(Hebrews 13:4/Romans 7:2-3). There are several references to an 'adulteress', both literal and symbolic, in The Bible.
1. David made BATHSHEBA an adulteress by having relations with her, while her husband was away at war. Though she was never stoned, both she and David suffered the rest of their lives for this act of disloyalty(2 Samuel 11:1-12:14). Based on their repentance, and past history of loyal behavior, God forgave them.
2. Tamar COULD have been killed as an adulteress woman if Judah had not decerned and admitted his role in the situation(Genesis 38:11,24-26).
3. Mary, after becoming pregnant by holy spirit, COULD have been mistakenly stoned as an 'adulteress' if Joseph had not listened to God, handling things as he did.(Deuteronomy 22:23-29/Matthew 1:18-24/Isaiah 7:14).
4. SYMBOLIC: The Nation of Israel was in a covenant relationship with God(YHWH), becoming his symbolic 'wife'. When they turned to pagan nations, God pointed out their disloyal behavior by instructing the prophet Hosea to marry a woman (Gomer) who would become an adulteress, to symbolize the disloyalty of the nation of Israel(Hosea 1:2-9)(Isaiah 54:5+6/Ezekiel 16:15, 25-29). This type of adultery is still hated by God(James 4:4). The city of Nineveh was exposed as an 'adulteress' because of 'her' sorceries and nationalism(Numbers 3:4+5). Jerusalem was also unfaithful to God and termed a prostitute/adulteress(Ezekiel 16:3,15,30-42). Babylon the Great, the world empire of false religion, is also termed an 'adulteress' because of it's spiritual fornication (Revelation 18: 2,3,24)
